In 1985 the original Wee Care Project was begun in Portland, Oregon, by the Rose Trellis Smockers. One member of the group was also a nurse at a Portland hospital. She identified a need for something in which to dress infants who had died at or shortly after birth. And so the project began.
The purpose in the Wee Care Project was to provide appropriate clothing to be kept on hand at the hospital for use when an infant dies at or shortly after birth. The staff could dress the infant for those precious moments the parents spend with the baby.
Since that time many other groups have inquired about and started projects. One church who started a project was Redeemer Lutheran Church from Charleston, SC. In June of 1992, they presented a workshop at the Statewide Women's Convention at Newberry College. Susan Hubbs was St. David's Women of the ELCA president that attended that workshop.
The idea grew with Susan. She contacted local hospitals to see if a need existed in our area, and indeed it did. On Sunday, September 20, 1992, at 6 p.m., St. David began our WEE Care Ministry.
For over 30 years, the WEE Care Ministry has made gowns, blankets, and buntings for local hospitals.
